My name is Melissa Sheffield and I am a member of Penn Laurel Girl Scout Council Senior troop #944. Since 1980, Senior Girl Scouts have capped their years of achievements in Girl Scouting by designing and carrying out a project that results in the receipt in the highest award in Girl Scouting, the Girl Scout Gold Award. This award expresses my commitment to myself and the community. For my Gold Award Project I am planning a “Safe Kids Day” April 24, 2004 at the New Franklin Ruritans. This project is important to me because i believe in educating children and their parents on the importance of staying safe. I am very interested in fingerprinting and DNA and hope to go to college for forensic science. I have received community support from New Franklin Ruritans, New Franklin Fire Dept., Chambersburg Police Dept., Pa State Police Dept., American Red Cross, Woodmen Of The World, Escape School, Franklin Rural Fire Dept. and surrounding school districts just to name a few. Together we hope to provide a community wide “Safe Kids Day.” I would appreciate your help to make my project a success. This event is free to the public with fun and informational activities planned. Any other organizations that may want to provide safety materials, presentations, entertainment or demostrations are encouraged to join the participants already commited to this great event.
